You may not have the coverage you need

Many travellers may be tempted to reply on their credit card coverage as their travel insurance.  The credit card travel coverage may be "free", but it may not have the coverage you need.

Check out the following before a medical emergency strikes while you are out of town.

How long are you covered for?

It is important to check the length of stay covered by credit card coverage, as well as any restrictions based on age.

Are you covered for emergency medical care after you arrive at your destination?

You need to be certain that not only do you have emergency medical protection when travelling to and from the airport, while travelling on the plane or in the taxi, but also protection if you suffer an accident or become ill after arriving at the destination. Expenses may not be covered, for a simple trip acorss the border, hospital costs can approach thousands of dollars a day.

Are there any restrictions or exclusions based on your age and health?

Credit card coverage may not be available or have serious exclusions If you are 61 years of age or older with a chronic illness.

In case of a medical emergency, will you have to guarantee or pay on site the fees charged by the health care provider?

Unlike private coverage, credit card insurance may not have the Travel Insurance's Assistance Centre that will arrange a direct payment for you and coordinate the claim with your provincial or territorial government health insurance plan.

Manulife Financial offers the following travel insurance options:

Out of province/ out of country travel insurance for Canadians
