Planning your financial future is more than just numbers. To me, it's your hopes, dreams and what you want to do with your life, that matter the most.

I will help you have a Life Well Lived by employing a proven strategic framework to identify and attain your life goals.

As a Senior Financial Planning Advisor at Assante, I can help you achieve your future dreams while enjoying peace of mind today. Whether it's a worry-free retirement, saving for your children’s education, fulfilling a lifelong ambition, running a prosperous business or leaving a legacy to your loved ones or a cherished cause, I will work with you every step of the way.

Creating and managing your wealth can be complex and time-consuming. My role is to simplify your life and save you time by addressing all aspects of your financial well-being from investments and insurance to tax and estate planning. Supported by a team of professionals including lawyers, tax accountants and financial analysts, I can help you make the right decisions about your wealth and help you build the future you desire.

For 24 years, I have been enjoying helping successful people live wonderful lives. My passion and focus are helping understand and realize each client’s unique life goals.

I have always had an interest in the human experience.  As a result, I have pursued and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Economics.  This degree helped strengthen my interest and understanding in Behavioral Economics and Finance, a field which explores various human biases and how they affect financial decision-making.  In my role as a Senior Financial Planning Advisor, I try to use these insights to help my clients avoid costly emotional financial mistakes.

To further strengthen my financial skills, I became a Certified Financial Planner.  This credential means that I have achieved and maintain internationally recognized standards of knowledge, skills, abilities and ethics. The CFP designation provides assurance to Canadians that the design of their financial future rests with an appropriately qualified professional who will put clients’ interests ahead of their own.

I specialize in combining sound proven fundamentals of financial planning, asset protection and investment management with the merits of leading-edge behavioral finance.  I also believe in thematic investing approaches that take advantage of relatively certain trends such as the need for increased sustainability and accelerating change driven by continual science and technological advancement.

Among my greatest strengths with my clients are my knowledge, integrity, commitment to exceptional service and a keen personal interest to understand the evolving marketplace.

On a personal note, I enjoy family time with my wife Tracy and two children, Michael and Emily. We are an active outdoor family spending time skiing, mountain biking and sailing. As a family we experience a Life Well Lived.

Ian Mellor, B.Sc., EPC, CFP®

Senior Financial Planner

The Study of Behavioural Finance indicates that most of us develop our understanding about managing money at age 10. This is often determined by the discussions our parents have around the dinner table and how they approach their own cash management.

My father was a country doctor in a small town in Alberta, so my brother and two sisters never felt we were poor. However; this was a time before Medicare and my father was most likely to receive eggs, wild meat and other items as people didn't always have the money to pay him. The town had 2 doctors and a 35 bed hospital where I would spend much of my time there, being spoiled by the nurses. One day, Mrs. Ryan, the Head Nurse gave me a 1958 BC Centennial Dollar which is still in my possession.  I loved the unique look of this coin because it was bigger and shinier than any coin I had ever seen. Over time, I collected more silver dollars and fifty cent pieces and still have them today. At the age of 9 I went to a boarding school for boys on Vancouver Island which incorporated the traditional British ideals of education patterned after Westminster School in London, it emphasized ‘fairness, hard work and sports’. My family followed me to Vancouver Island 5 years later.

Although, I planned to become a medical doctor, having completed a degree in Bacteriology at UVic while working as an Orderly in the Jubilee Hospital, I realized that the medical field didn’t really appeal to me.  As a result, my uncle suggested I move to Winnipeg in the summer of 1972 and begin working in a family-owned Trust Company. I quickly discovered my passion as it related to all the facets of Trust and Mortgage work. By April, 1973 I was managing my own branch for Fidelity Trust in Edmonton. The mortgage business in Alberta in the 1970’s was exciting and brisk, however; I wanted to be the owner of my own business.

In May 1976 a partner and I created Merit Mortgage. The markets were kind to us until the National Energy Policy came into effect. After three years of doing receiverships and foreclosures, I came to Vancouver to start in the Financial Planning Business with Investors Group. Rather than work for a company, I preferred to work for my clients doing ‘Fee for Service' Financial Planning.  As a result Mellor Financial Group Inc. was established in May, 1990.

Mellor Financial Group operates out of the Assante West Pender branch located on the top floor of the 800 West Pender offices. The success of Mellor Financial Group Inc. is due to the quality of our support team of June Lee-Keil, Alim Dhanji, Kim Larsen-Mellor and Anita Hyrapet. Initially Mellor Financial Group Inc. was part of the FPC Organization, however; FPC was purchased by Assante in 2001. Today, Mellor Financial Group Ltd. manages $100 million of assets.

Throughout the past 23 years, I have been fortunate to have acquired my CFP, and my EPC. As a member of the Board of Directors of B.C. Financial Planning Association, I was Chair of the Ethics Committee for 7 years and Program Chair for 6 years. Throughout this time, Mellor Financial Group Inc. has continued to assist our clients with attaining their goals using structures which incorporate the fundamentals of Behavioural Finance. Our process is both disciplined and measureable. After completing a Financial Plan and an Investment Policy Statement, we establish a ‘roadmap’ for clients to achieve their objectives with a focus on ‘Education, Communication and Performance’. We are embracing the ‘fee disclosure rules’ so that all clients have a full understanding of the cost. I believe it is very important for our team to ‘articulate our value proposition’ to our clients throughout the Financial Planning process.

Our ideal client is willing to create ‘meaningful and specific goals’, has investible assets of $250,000 or more, requires a more ‘structured approach’ to their financial planning and is open to ‘true and tested financial planning strategies’. Ideally, I will have done my job when my clients know about the fees they pay and understand the value received for our services.  When my ideal client informs me that they ‘know they are on target’ for their financial objectives then I know that our process is working.

I am fortunate to be the father of three girls, Samantha, Melissa and Jenna. My wife, Kim, also works in the business and manages the office. My interests include running, cycling, travelling and photography. I am the past president of the Evergreen Squash Club on the North Shore and the Financial Planning representative for the Vancouver Executives Association which was established in 1920.

The Mellor Financial Group Inc. is an outside business activity that may offer non-securities-related financial planning services (such as financial planning and tax filing preparation services).  Any specific investment recommendations provided by Ian Mellor must be done through Assante Financial Management Ltd. (“Assante”), a registered mutual fund dealer.  Although Assante is not responsible for any service or product supplied through The Mellor Financial Group Inc., Assante will monitor for conflicts of interest, and investigate any client complaints related to services offered by The Mellor Financial Group Inc.

Rich Widdifield, CFP®

Senior Financial Planner

Rich has been a Financial Advisor since 1998. His entire career has been with Assante Capital Management Ltd. Rich is a CFP professional licensed to provide investments (including securities and mutual funds) and life and living benefits insurance.

He began his career working with his father on Vancouver Island. Rich was fortunate to learn from an advisor with over 30 years experience, and they still discuss financial planning frequently. Having access to that experience is incredibly valuable.

In 2000, Rich moved to Vancouver and started his own practice. In those early years of difficult markets, Rich began to see the value in personal financial planning and giving clients a plan that focuses on much more than their investments, in areas they can control.

Rich works primarily with high income earners in their maximum earning years. Much of his client base is made up of business owners, high income professionals, and professional athletes with complex needs, wishing to maximize savings and minimize tax. Rich takes pride in helping clients develop a clear plan of what they need to do to successfully navigate the transition to retirement – all while enjoying life today.

Rich grew up in the Okanagan and on Vancouver Island. After high school he moved to Ottawa and attended Carleton University, where he studied Commerce.

After university, he worked for a radio station and then as a manager for a very successful small business. In 1993, he moved to Victoria where he was with a food distribution company. It was in those 3 positions that Rich had the opportunity to work with and observe a number of small businesses – both successful and struggling.  Having seen all that a business owner or successful professional has to deal with, has enabled Rich focus on making financial planning clear and flexible with easy to implement strategies.

Rich’s objective is to put clients in control of their finances and their financial future. He gives them the tools and information to make educated decisions that help them to achieve their goals. Without a huge time commitment, this allows clients to know where they stand and where they are going, as well as providing peace of mind, knowing that this important area is taken care of.

Rich has a vast knowledge in the areas of investments, risk management, tax planning and personal finance, specifically in debt and cash flow management. This provides him the prospect of locating opportunities for clients to consistently increase their net worth without sacrificing their present lifestyle.

Rich resides in Tsawwassen, BC with his wife Andrea and their two dogs. His stepdaughter, Kaela recently graduated from Acadia University and lives in London, England.

Outside of work, Rich loves to watch and play sports. He and Andrea enjoy golfing with friends and family at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen and curling at the Tunnel Town Curling Club. Rich plays hockey and he and Andrea have season tickets to the Canucks. They also enjoy traveling, cooking, and learning about (and tasting!!) wine. Rich has also run 4 marathons, including Chicago, New York and Boston.
