RRIF Minimum Withdrawal Calculator

RRIF Minimum Withdrawal Calculator

Find the prescribed RRIF minimum withdrawal percentage for your age and estimate your annual minimum withdrawal based on the value of your RRIF.

1. Age Used for the RRIF Calculation

Use your age on January 1 of the year for which the minimum payment is being calculated.
A spouse/common-law partner age can only be used if that election was made for the RRIF. Once made, the election generally cannot be changed for that RRIF.
The required RRIF minimum is $0 in the calendar year the RRIF is established.
How the factor works:
For a standard RRIF, the prescribed factor is based on age at the beginning of the year. For ages under 71, the factor is calculated as 1 ÷ (90 − age). At age 71 and older, the prescribed CRA factors shown in the reference table below apply.

2. Estimate Your Annual Minimum

For the official minimum, use the RRIF fair market value at the start of the year, generally January 1, not today's current balance.
Optional. This lets you estimate how much of the annual minimum may still need to be withdrawn.

Important Information
  • This calculator is intended for standard RRIFs and provides an estimate only.
  • The minimum amount for the year the RRIF is established is $0. The required annual minimum begins in the following calendar year.
  • The official minimum is generally calculated using the fair market value of the RRIF at the beginning of the year multiplied by the applicable prescribed factor.
  • If a valid spouse/common-law partner age election was made when the RRIF was established, that elected age is used for the prescribed factor.
  • You may withdraw more than the minimum. Amounts above the minimum may have different withholding-tax treatment.
  • This calculator does not apply special factors for pre-March 1986 or qualifying pre-1993 RRIFs, nor does it calculate LIF, LRIF or RLIF maximum withdrawals.
  • Always confirm the official annual minimum with the financial institution that holds the RRIF.
