Market News– Week Ending March 27, 2026
Statistics Canada reported that average weekly earnings rose 0.3% in January. On a year-over-year basis, average weekly earnings rose 2.0%, which is similar to the current pace of inflation (1.8% in February). These results are in line with market expectations. As this indicator measures growth in income, it can reveal trends in consumer spending.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced that initial jobless claims totalled 210,000 (seasonally adjusted) in the week ending March 21, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 205,000. The 4-week moving average was 210,500, a decrease of 250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 210,750. These results are in line with market estimates.
